Process as Guide

I find the source and inspiration for my art in the beauty of the things I see in the real world, the things I see in my imagination, and the things I dream.  I feel and remember them in my body.  I find the poetic image in my heart, sometimes poignant or impossible, curious or exciting, humorous or tragic.  And, once I’ve painted a few marks, most of all, I respond to the paint on the canvas.  The marks—their size, shape, location, direction, color drive a process that includes decisions, experiments and accidents.  The paint itself is my ultimate guide in making a painting. My eye’s mind is the cauldron where I cook the composition--forms and lines, and spice it with light, shadow and color. The painting itself, once begun, tells me everything I need to do and how to do it. 
The communication from the first inspiration to the paint on the canvas and the eye that trusts those marks is a mysterious energy.  Its results are my paintings.
